An Authentic Mystery

I’ve read “American Crime Stories”. It is in Oxford Bookworms Library. Oxford Bookworms Library offers a wide range of original and adapted stories, which take learners from elementary to advanced level through six carefully graded language stages. John Escott retold this book and it has several short stories. After I read “Lipstick”, that is one of “American Crime Stories”, I thought it is a good example of a mystery. Original one was written by Mary Roberts Rinehart.



This is my view of an authentic mystery.



The main character is a young lady. She is not beautiful but cute and affable. She doesn’t think of herself as a beautiful woman. She is gentle, generous and charitable. And the most important thing, as a heroine, is that she has a friend, sister or cousin who is a beautiful woman. This woman is gorgeous but a bit silly, a bit selfish and a bit arrogant. And such a woman is always involved in trouble. She always helps her, even if a man, whom she loves, loves that beautiful woman.



The beautiful woman always has her own admirer. Sometimes it is her husband or sometimes it is a rich, simple, young man. He is madly in love by the woman. He does anything for her. He is imprisoned by his love for her.



One more important character is a handsome man. Such a man is usually mysterious. And sometimes he is suspected to be a criminal. They tend to think that the beautiful woman and the handsome man should be a couple. But when all is done, they can know it is actually not.



We usually have a strange person in a mystery. She/He is obviously suspicious. She/He usually has some relationship to the main characters.



When the beautiful woman is involved in trouble, the cute girl will start to help her. She will start investigating by herself. She definitely puts the criminal into a corner and the criminal tries to harm her. At that time the handsome man or in other cases a smart detective protects her. He is usually the only one who believes what she says, and rescues her at the last moment.



Usually the criminal is the last person who is suspected. It is so incredible that we can say, “Oh, my God!!!”



Last but not least, the handsome man is to be charmed by the cute girl. Her courage attracts him and her beauty also attracts him. In fact she is supposed to be a beautiful woman like they found out that Cinderella is beautiful after all. Needless to say, they fall in love finally.
